Plant Care and F.A.Q.
* Do you sell your Sedums & Semps? When and Where? Yes, I do when I thin out my rock garden. I start late Feb. to early March and continue until early summer. Then again in early fall. Sedums come as cuttings only, 50+ Cuttings or 100+ Cuttings, named and labeled. Some have roots. Most will be cuttings that need grow roots first. Plant in a pot with well drained soil. Shade at first, then full sun. Most of my sedums are hardy to zone 5. But please ask first. Semps in sets of 12 , and 50 varieties, named and labeled, are at least the size of a US Quarter. If Species is small to tiny I will include extra chicks. Grab bags are also available in mid spring. 25+ Semps that have lost their name. Who knows what you'll find? When I collect them I make sure you get different colors, textures and sizes. All Semps are mailed without soil. BARE ROOT in brown paper bags. They should receive all the TLC that is due when they arrive! Semps may also lose some color during shipping. Do you provide planting instructions with my Order? No, but you can read right here what to do and what not to do and save a tree! Plant Hardiness: All Semps are hardy to zone 4. Some even to zone 3. (Most Arach's) If you're not sure they can be grown in containers and should be protected from the winter elements. They have survived: (Customer Testimonials) Hurricane Katrina, a Kansas City Blizzard that lasted 6 days, a Flash Flood in Kentucky where the plants were under water for 3 days and a Tornado in Oklahoma where the Mobile Home was gone but the Hen's and Chicks barley damaged when discovered under the rubble. What more can you ask for in a plant? Planting and Care: All Semps may be grown in full sun. Temps should be no more than 90 degrees for an extended period. Then I would suggest giving them either am or pm shade. I suggest you plant them in a container first, place them in the shade for several days if it is too sunny and water thoroughly, allowing soil to dry between watering. Good drainage is a must and keep the Hen above the soil line.
All Sedums and Semps can be planted in the same soil mix. I do not
endorse but recommend, unless you want to mix your own, buy Miracle
Grow Potting or Garden soil. After putting soil in pots, wet it down
really good and then plant your plants. They will get an excellent
start before planting them in your garden.
You just received your order and you're in the
90's already. Have your pots ready with wet soil
before planting. No need to spray or mist the plants. Keep them in the
shade or they will fry in the sun. They will burn really quick. They
take about a week or two to bounce back from being boxed up and
shipped. Once you see that they're starting to grow I'd give them about
an hour or two of either morning sun or late evening sun. Then back in
the shade. I know it doesn't only sound like a lot of work it really
is. (or maybe just for nut cases like me) Once you have a few days in the row with overcast/partly
cloudy skies place them in the "sun spot" for a longer period.
Depending on the weather (80's) you might be able to leave them there
while its overcast.
Be careful when you water the semps in this heat. Water drops that stay
on the leaves will slowly heat up and will damage the plant. Its like a
slow cooker. They really don't need much water to survive. They will
curl up into a ball when they're too dry. I wouldn't wait that long but
you can neglect them and they will bounce back. However they won't
bounce back easily if you over water.
With the soil moist when planting you won't have to water them for 4-5
days, maybe longer. The I water only the spot in the pot where there is
room, no leaves. Just a little bit, over and over again until it drains
out on the bottom. You don't want to shower them. If you have rain let
Mother Nature take its course but only if there isn't Sun immediately
after the shower.
Sedums are much easier. They don't care where they water hits them.
Plant all cuttings, roots or not, in wet potting soil. They will start
growing within a week or two. Then let them dry out between watering.
Why doesn't my plant look like the one in the picture? Semps change their colors. There is nothing you can do, unless you do it on purpose. Like move them from full sun to more shade than sun or vice versa. I have my semps growing in small containers exposed to the elements. Part sun and part shade. When I list them on ebay to sell I always add the date when I take the picture. Auctions usually run for seven days. The semps that get listed are then moved into a more protected area. Don't want anything to happen to them. They also get less sun than before. I've had last minute sun/water damage before and have grown more careful since then. I collect, package and ship on the same day. Usually Monday through Wednesday. Transit can take up to three days. Three days without soil, water, packaged up with no air flow. They can do some incredible things like shrivel up, completely loose their color, or both. Some will drop leaves. These changes seem to be more more drastic during the really hot season. So, now what? Well, two options here. Give it a chance to recover from being moved, boxed and shipped. At least a week or two. Any Nursery that sells bare root semps will tell you the same thing. They just shrivel a bit and loose some color. Some more than others. If I would say every time I received a plant that it looks nothing like the one in the picture, and send it back, I wouldn't have any. But you're always welcome to send it back.
